Quoc Dang (Q-D) Residence
The Q-D Residence was intended as a speculative endeavor designed while employed with Pb Elemental. The west facing site on the northwest portion of Mercer Island has views to Lake Washington and Seattle's Skyline beyond. The Developer's charge was to build the lot to its maximum potential and to take advantage of the lake and city views.
A semi-subterranean Garage and Playroom in the Basement allowed two additional levels to be built above per the City of Mercer Island's Land Use Code. The main Living spaces along with a guest room occupy the Middle Level and Bedrooms make up the Upper Level. A large Roof Deck seeks to capture the full potential of the Lake and City views and supplements the homes lack of a view from the Rear Yard due to placement of the Structure and Setback requirements. The Roof Deck dictated a contemporary expression with flat roofs and parapets.
A glazed Entry and Stair bisect the house from west to east and disposes spaces to either side. This arrangement helps to define programmatic elements between formal and informal on the main Living Level and Master Suite and Children's Rooms on the Upper Level.
Large openings to the view and exterior building materials help emphasize the project's modern aesthetic. A combination of cement board panels and stained cedar siding each detailed as rain-screen define the exterior.
Design was completed in 2008.
